Before that 1974 Bond movie starring Roger Moore and Christopher Lee no one knew about this island. A distinctive trait of this famous bay is the number of sheer limestone cliffs that vertically jut out of the emerald-green water. James Bond Island had a local name : Koh Tapu, meaning ‘Nail Island’ for the pointy rock, and Koh Phi Khan for the island surrounding it, meaning “hills leaning against each other”.

According to legend, a fisherman used to fish in the waters where the rock island is located today. This fisherman caught plenty of fish every day, but one day, all he caught with his net was a piece of nail. He threw the nail back into the water, but when he threw his net, he would catch it again – with no fish in sight. In a rage, he hit the nail with a sharp object with all his might, forcing one-half of the nail to jump into the water, which led to the rising of a rock formation that is the Ko Tapu.

It is a protected marine area of the Ao Phang Nga Marine National Park, so boats aren’t allowed to get too close to the island. This formation is under the protection of Ao Phang Nga National Park and since 1998 boats have not been allowed to sail too close to the island. The two best ways to view James Bond Island are from top or from a small beach on Koh Ping Ghan. Koh Ping Ghan is a very high leaning rock with several small caves inside. The Andaman Sea is dotted with hundreds of small limestone islands, called karsts, of various sizes. making them really quite unique. The karsts have been formed over millions of years as softer rock around the limestone is eroded creating gigantic pillars of stone. Belonging to the National Marine Park, the four islands of the Koh Hong Archipelago are set against the spectacular backdrop of Phang Nga Bay with its rocky outcrops.
Hong Island
The main island, Koh Hong is uninhabited, except for the birds, white-faced gibbons and monitor lizards that can be often spotted on the main white sand beach. It has stunning twin bays on its east side, and two rockier beaches on its north shore. Koh Hong is just a day trip rather than an overnight destination. Its National Park status thankfully means there can be no development, no resorts and certainly no private beaches on the islands.
Long Tail Boat
Hong is the Thai word for ‘room’, so literally translated, it means Room Island. There is a very good reason for this as right as its center is a lagoon completely surrounded by cliffs. The entrance to the lagoon is quite narrow making the whole experience quite spectacular. The longtail and speedboats pass right into the lagoon where the water is at about waist height at low tide and perfectly calm. It is surrounded by mangroves with their incredible root systems. So once you are there you have only one mission, to kayak around to the back of the island and find your way into the ‘‘room’’ – a secret lagoon. You just have to paddle past the island’s majestic cliffs and duck through a low-hanging arch before nosing your way into the lagoon via a passageway that would be easy to miss if you weren’t looking for it.
Koh Hong
What puts Koh Hong on top of many visitors’ itineraries, is its spectacular rock formation and its breathtaking natural lagoon surrounded by majestic limestone formations. Kayaks are provided by your tour company, for the full circumnavigation of the island – approximately one hour’s paddle is involved around the coastline – as the landscape is incredible. The lagoon is best accessed at low tide by kayak, as the diminishing water level makes its colour change drastically from a deep emerald green to a clear turquoise.

The entrance to the lagoon is through a dramatic cliff passage that should be photographed on your way out. Here no one will be trying to sell you anything, just a lone lifeguard stationed at a desk which is a rare thing in Southeast Asia! It truly is a little piece of paradise that is genuinely relaxing. Koh Hong is under Than Bok Khorani National Park and it’s only open for day visits and strictly no overnight stays allowed.

Panak island is the one of the traditional places at Phang Nga bay to travel in a canoe, in which there are about 9 inter-connected lagoons with many caves and tunnels. Huge in size, the laced lagoons, both underwater and above it. If you are lucky, and with low tide you can see natural reseeding canoeing in Panak island cave for 150 meters and in the end will see a huge, beautiful mangrove lagoon.

Experience the joy of an adventurer as your guide squeezes the canoe through dark, narrow passages to reveal a pool of water surrounded on all sides by towering limestone formations. Our tour operator assigned guides for each canoe and ours was literally super knowledgeable about everything we were seeing and he took us to different lagoons than everyone else went to. Deep within Koh Panak you will find a hong filled with mangrove trees. The island was formed long ago, originally from sedimentary layers on the bottom of a tropical ocean, with no volcanic activity involved in the island formation.

So the rock is soft and the limestone and minerals can ooze over time. Sitting in a small sea canoe and going into different dark caves is one of the highlights of my life; it was so memorable, and it’s the ultimate satisfaction of the importance of traveling experiences over things.

Bangla Road is now mostly known as Bangla Walking Street or even Thanon Bangla, and for many decades has been the notorious heart of all Phuket nightlife. This is the perfect place to bring a romantic picnic basket or at least a bottle of water as there are rarely any vendors here – Just a covered sala and a small parking space.

Although it is known as Karon view point – this place is located a little afar from the Karon beaches. And actually located near to the Kata Beach. Travelers come here to appreciate the picture of perfect beauty from the top of the hill.

1) There’s plenty of parking at the Karon Viewpoint and it’s on the road between Kata and Nai Harn beach. Kata itself is just a ten-minute drive away and it’s the same distance to Nai Harn so a taxi or tuk tuk doesn’t cost too much.
2) There’s a place to get food and a gazebo with tables and chairs in the shade, but prices are high and options are limited, so you might want to bring your own food and water.
3) As with any beautiful spot, it is the crowd that spoils the experience too. Tour buses line up the lane to the viewpoint and hoards of tourists gather around to snap a few photos. So use your skill and click good pictures in the crowd or come again in the evening after watching sunset when this place is less crowded.
4) The view to the north of the lookout is where you’ll snap the idyllic picture of Phuket, with the Andaman Sea lapping at white sanded beaches and little islands castaway off the shore.
The Phuket Big Buddha is a 45-metre-tall white marble statue visible from anywhere in the southern part of Phuket with a jaw-dropping and breathtaking panoramic views. Phuket Big Buddha is one of the main highlights of the island, providing you with an incredible experience through the tinkling of small bells and the fluttering yellow Buddhist flags. A soft background dharma music plays all day to suck you into the sacred and lively moment within the temple. The Phuket Big Buddha is accompanied by a smaller Buddha statue, gold in color and made of 20 tons of brass.

Phuket Big Buddha started in 2002 as the foundation stone was laid by General Phijit Kulawanich, Privy Councilor, on May 22, 2002. The official name is ‘Phraphutthamingmongkhol-akenagakhiri Buddha’ that translates as “Happiness on top of Nakerd Mountain”. The road to the statue is well paved and easy to ride despite many curves; however, drive slowly and carefully on the way down. When reaching the top of the hill, you will find ample and well-organised parking. As you approach the site, a security officer will check your attire, and if your shorts or skirts are too short, you will be required to wear a sarong, provided for free.

Few steps to the west, another short staircase will take you to a terrace from which you’ll get a beautiful view of Kata Bay and Kata Noi Bay. From up there, you’ll get from there a magnificent panorama of Karon Beach.

A recently added sweeping staircase now leads to the Buddha monument. There are 94 steps to reach the Big Buddha and climbing them is relatively easy. Note that the stairs are only to climb up; you are not allowed to walk them down. There is a separate way down on the hillside, and a security guard sitting there all day makes sure people respect this rule.

The Wat Chalong temple is the largest, most revered and most visited Buddhist temple in Phuket. The temple complex was built in its current location in 1837. Some remains of older structures have been found, however it is unknown exactly how old they are. The large grounds of Wat Chalong that is officially named Wat Chaitararam contains a viharn, a mondop, a ubosot, a chedi containing a secret relic, a sala and a crematorium.

Wat Chalong Temple is most famous for the sacred relic that is kept here, a fragment of a bone of the Buddha. The relic that is named Phra Borom Sareerikatat is kept inside a glass case on top of the 60 meters high Phra Mahathat Chedi. It was brought over from Sri Lanka and was installed in the chedi by King Maha Vajiralongkorn.The Grand Pagoda dominating the temple contains a splinter of Lord Buddha’s bone and is officially named Phramahathatchedi-Jomthaibarameepragat. The pagoda is decorated with wall paintings depicting the Buddha’s life story and also features various Buddha images.

Wat Chalong Chedi is built on three floors so feel free to climb all the way to the top floor terrace to get a beautiful bird view on the entire temple grounds. Few more steps will lead you to a glass display where the fragment of bone can be contemplated. You can see the nearby Phuket Big Buddha from there, but you can see it from almost anywhere in the southern part of Phuket island.

Wat Chalong also has a long history of being associated with healing. Several stories deal with Luang Phor Cham’s walking stick, that is believe to hold healing powers. A number of people were said to be cured of stomach pains after being touched with the stick. The famous walking stick is still being kept in the ubosot, but can not be viewed by the public.

Poh Than Jao Wat is one of the more important Buddhist statues in Wat Chalong. It is located in the westerly old hall of the temple, with two statues of an elderly gentleman called Ta Khee-lek (grandpa Khee-lek), a famous local who won many lotteries after consulting the Poh Than Jao Wat statue. Another statue in this hall is called Nonsi.

There is also an air-conditioned ‘exhibition home’ of Luang Poh Cham which features lifelike human-sized wax models of Luang Poh Cham, Luang Poh Chuang, Luang Poh Gleum, and Luang Pu Thuad along with antique Thai furniture, and Benjarong (Thai porcelain designed in five colours), while the famous ‘magic’ walking-stick of Luang Poh Cham is kept at the current Abbot’s dwelling.

Buddhist people come to the temple to pay respect to the Buddha by lighting candles, offering lotus flowers and applying gold leafs to Buddha statues. Often you will see firecrackers being set off as a way of showing gratitude for prayers that have been answered. Local people also go the temple to ask for the winning lottery numbers and to pray for health, good luck and wealth.
Tips to the Travelers :
1. Shoes are never allowed inside any temple, so be sure to leave yours outside with all the others.
2. All are required to cover their shoulders and wear pants or skirts that extend down to their knees.
3. Best day to visit is a weekday. On weekends and Thai public holidays the grounds can get very busy.
4. Certain level of respect is expected, Speak in a quiet tone within the temple and don’t touch the statues or other Buddhist relics.
5. Free Entrance and plenty of Free parking for cars and motorbikes.
