Arukku Bamboo Chicken
But the winner is the Arukku Bamboo Chicken. It was cooked to perfection. Though a little heavy with lots of spices, the dish was indeed the show-stopper in the main course. Enjoyably Delicious Breakfast Buffet at Darjeeling House, Ramada Darjeeling
First a big thanks to Ramada Darjeeling management for arranging this trip for us. This tea estate was established by Mr. David Wilson in 1854 and then known as Wilson Tea Estate. This tea garden is the one of the biggest tea estate in Darjeeling, West Bengal. It spans 440 acres of land and is located at a height of 6,900 feet above the sea level. In 1929, Tarapada Banerjee bought the Windsor tea estate and merged another nearby estate and gave the name Happy Valley Tea Estate. Presently this Tea Estate is owned by, Banerjee family from Hooghly.
Happy Valley Tea Estate
Located just below Hill Cart road, the Happy Valley Tea Estate is worth a visit, especially during March through May, when the plucking and processing are in progress. The approach of this Tea Estate is through a narrow winding downhill road which is quite steep. So if you are walking, the walk on your way back is likely to be quite cumbersome. But the scenic rewards on the way are enormous. The entire procedure of tea plucking, procession and packaging is interesting to experience. Tea lovers can surely buy some fresh tea from here. The entry in the estate if free however if visitors wants a detailed tour they can hire a tour guide.
Happy Valley Tea Estate
It become one of the major tourist attractions for its beautiful carpeted greenery which may sweep scenery lovers off their feet. Happy Valley Tea garden’s factory is the highest altitude tea factory in the world. Darjeeling has got a number of tea estates but none matches the scenic beauty of this particular one. A trip across this estate will also allow you to understand the processes involved in tea plantation, including the plucking, withering, fermenting and the drying process.
Happy Valley Tea Estate
Tourists can stroll down to the tea estate in the morning and rejuvenate the feeling of standing on the field of tea. If you have enough free time then you can go for a hiking or you can ride a cycle and have a tour in the valleys else you can enjoy a guided tea factory visit too. At the end of the factory tour you will be taken to the factory outlet where you can sample and taste various types of tea produced in the estate. If you want, you can also buy tea here.
Happy Valley Tea Estate
If you want to just taste a cup of best quality tea in Darjeeling, then there is another way. There is a small tea shop right next to the factory, Happy Golden Cafe which is run by a local lady. She has samples of the estate tea which she apparently collects from the employees quota. This is where you can have a cup of excellent black tea for Rs. 25/-. The lady will make it for you from leaves plucked at the gardens here.
Happy Valley Tea Estate
There are seasons for different types of tea’s, Green and little bit of White Tea are plucked during March to May. June to August is the season for Black Tea. September to November is again the season for Green and White Tea. The tea garden’s factory usually remains closed from November to February because tea plucking does not take place during winter. You can however see the tea gardens from outside. This tea Estate is certified by United Nations FAO project as a model tea estate and their first flush and second flush teas are extremely popular in all over world.
Just a short two minute walk from Darjeeling Mall, Glenary’s is a cosy bakery & restaurant that is great for spending wonderful time over light bites and excellent tea or coffee! Glenary’s Bakery & Cafe is well known for the breakfast it serves. Swing by in the mornings and perch yourself on one of their wooden benches along the open air balcony area. If you can spare more time, enjoy a simple breakfast of Roasted Pork Sub Sandwich with Hot Chocolate.
Glenary’s
Run by the Edwards family, Glenary’s is a prominent landmark of Darjeeling and existing since the British colonial days. Glenary’s has remained as the best bakery in Darjeeling district. Many restaurants and even star hotels in Darjeeling buy the fresh breads, cheese, cakes and pastry from Glenary’s and serve them to their customers, such has been its reputation. They have opened two outlets recently, one at the lower town of Darjeeling at Chowk Bazaar and another at Bagdogra (near the airport).
Glenary’s
Food Served on Table :
Roasted Pork Sub Sandwich
Roasted Pork Sub Sandwich – Freshly baked crusty sub sandwich rolls are layered with savory, tender, juicy, marinated and roasted pork loin, caramelized onions, bell pepper, mushrooms, iceberg lettuce and two slices of cheese. Glenary’s is sort of a local legend in making an amazingly tasty pork roast just for these Sub Sandwiches.
Hot Chocolate
Hot Chocolate – The Hot Chocolate here is smooth, with a nutty hint, but it is the flavour that you cannot miss. The hot, velvety smooth chocolate concoction is the most balanced we’ve tried so far. Such a delight before taking on the rest of the day!
Describing Taste and Flavor :
Hot Chocolate
It was raining like cats and dog since morning and my mind is telling me – no tea or coffee at hotel today, go straight for Glenary’s and sip their hot chocolate while adoring the chill winds. The Hot Chocolate here is great for a rainy day boost — a perfect blend of dark chocolate and milk, and is the perfect cocoa fix to start the day with. Let the cool wind gush in with the drizzle, let it rain!
Roasted Pork Sub Sandwich
When the weather forecast calls for a cold rainy day, hot Roasted Pork Sub Sandwich sounds the most appealing. Don’t miss out on the decadent Roasted Pork Sub Sandwich, featuring lightly seasoned roasted pork meat accompanied by onions, bell pepper, mushrooms, iceberg lettuce, cheese and a spread of chilli aioli sandwiched between multigrain sub.
Glenary’s
When in Darjeeling, this spacious, insta-worthy bakery is the spanking place to be for solid breakfast. Seating is limited, and most come by to quietly immerse themselves in the soothing aroma of baking cakes and brewing Darjeeling tea at Glenary’s Bakery & Cafe. This beautiful and nostalgic colonial space is set to be a hot hangout around the Darjeeling Mall.

I am usually delighted to read his blogs in culinary arena as he keeps discovering unique ones and it's always a pleasure to try some of his recommendations when on the go. Till date his choice is commendable and relates to his size as well! He defiantly inculcates confidence with his blog Gourmets Travel Guide where followers like us always open for a blind date with his recommendations!
