In case you’re wondering, there are two Kan Eangs in Chalong: The newest version is Kan Eang @ Pier and situated Chalong Pier. Both serve predominately seafood dishes and, if anything, Kan Eang 2 is a tad more traditional in its cuisine. Open since 1973 and with over 100 staff members, the sprawling garden restaurant enjoys great views over Chalong Bay and nearby Koh Lone Island, as well as of dozens of neighbouring yachts bobbing and straining at their anchors in this naturally sheltered inlet.

Kan Eang 2 has everything a good seafood restaurant should have, and more. Fresh fish, crabs, prawns and shells are the main ingredients, and both restaurants probably get it from the same place. Food and service are less sophisticated, the menu appears shorter, crabs are a little smaller, but they serve everything you can expect from such venue, plus the price is significantly lower!

The Tom Yum Talay with tons of prawns, mussels, fish, mushrooms and squid in a tangy, spicy flavour-packed broth served in a charcoal pot is good for sharing — especially on rainy days.

Also good is their Khao Pad Boo with minced crab-meat that sees silky smooth fresh crab meat in fried rice and tons of fried egg.

Impress your friends with their Kung Thod Sod Makham that sees generous portions of prawns meat in a tamarind sauce that brings out the prawn’s sweetness.

Be sure to get their Thot Man Kung that balances sinfully good deep fried bites of fresh prawns, lightly pan-fried slices with seaweed in batter.

Round off the meal with Gai Pad Med Ma Muang, juicy and soft fried chicken with cashew nut.

For sharing, get the Pla Pao – the whole fish, that stars a thick sauce with a slight kick, best enjoyed with a glass of beer. This Salt-Crusted Whole Grilled Fish with Lemongrass is another Phuket signature dish that you shouldn’t go away without trying. The clean clear taste of incredibly fresh grilled fish is brilliantly accented by aromatic Lemongrass.

Try one of the set menus here to catch the best of what’s on offer; recommended dishes are pla nueng manow – steamed whole fish in lemon and chilis, Thai spicy soup, and deep-fried shrimp cakes. Typically, diners will order several dishes and share them by placing them in the center of the table and helping themselves accordingly.

Thank god for the smells, because the restaurant itself makes such a strong impression it can be hard to figure out how good the food is, at first. And the food is very, very good. It is homey and special, comforting, and transportive enough to make you happy you decided to pay someone else to cook for you. The setting by the beach is striking. Sober simplicity and peacefulness, it has this unique atmosphere that will relax your mind down to the island mood. It might be the shade of the many trees added to a cool sea breeze, right on the Chalong beachfront with a view on mooring sailing boats and islands in the far.
